Chip Castille
Founder & Principal
Chip Castille brings decades of experience in asset management to Castille Labs. His background spans product design, portfolio optimization, and business practice design; disciplines that require rigorous analytical thinking and a deep understanding of how risk and uncertainty affect real-world outcomes.
Chip began his career with Wells Fargo Nikko Investment Advisors (now BlackRock) and was on the team that created the first target-date fund in 1993: LifePath. In 1996 Chip created manager structure optimization, a technique that uses modern portfolio theory to construct a portfolio of fund managers. For this work he was awarded a Bernstein-Fabozzi award from The Journal of Portfolio Management in 2000.
From 2000 to 2007 Chip was Chief Investment Officer at Wilshire Associates where he led the growth of their discretionary funds management business from $2bn AUM to just over $100bn.
In 2007 Chip returned to Barclays Global Investors (formerly Wells Fargo Nikko Investment Advisors, now BlackRock) where he led development of LifePath Income, the first target-date fund with lifetime income included as an asset class. In 2009, upon BlackRock's acquisition of Barclays Global Investors, Chip led their U.S. Defined Contribution business where assets under management grew from $200bn to $600bn. During this period he led development of BlackRock's CoRI index, the first daily index to track the cost of retirement income. He also led the development of iRetire, an award-winning retirement planning tool. In 2014 Chip became Global Retirement Strategist for BlackRock, leading the firm's thinking and practices on retirement related topics.
In 2018 Chip founded Lasso, a service designed to match financial advisors and investment managers with individual investors looking for actionable retirement advice. In 2023 Chip returned to Wilshire Associates as Chief Product Officer. In 2026 Chip started Castille Labs to bring Salience to the market — the first operational risk model that helps managers and investors measure and manage the uncertainty that arises from operational business activities.
